We want scientists to actively think about the resources used for their research
Things are always easier to achieve together, and we want to help you to do this
We offer useful information to help scientists work more sustainably
We want to connect labs in Austria to reduce our carbon footprint
Global warming represents one of the biggest threats to the well-being of mankind. Paradoxically, while scientific research is instrumental for solving the imminent climate crisis, our activities contribute significantly to anthropogenic climate change.
Green Labs Austria aims to connect laboratories in Austria that share the vision of a more sustainable research. We want to change the status quo of resource management and offer guidelines for a transition to more environmentally aware research practices. We hope to achieve this by collaborating with groups and institutions from various disciplines.
Specifically, we want to reform how labs and scientists think about energy consumption, plastic consumption, recycling and traveling

Plastic Recycling Coordinator; Green Labs Austria Team
Andrea is the laboratory manager in the Schleper group and a former scientist.
He is a problem solver and initiator of the laboratory plastic waste sorting. His aim is to raise awareness that a different way to do things is possible and that small efforts by everyone will lead to a real change.

Board Member; Green Labs Austria Team
Logan is a PostDoc in the Schleper Lab studying the nitrogen cycle. Specifically, he is focused on ammonia oxidizing archaea and the role these organisms have in the global carbon and nitrogen cycles.

Board Member; Green Labs Austria Team
Senior Staff Scientist in the Archaea Biology & Ecogenomics group in the University of Vienna. Interested in the intersection of science & politics, and believes that collective action can change the world.

Board Member; Green Labs Austria Team
After a PhD and PostDoc in the Environmental Cell Biology Group at the University of Vienna, Philipp joined EMBO as a Sustainability Officer. He wants to contribute to transforming our world following the terms of the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development.

Board Member; Green Labs Austria Team
After completing his PhD in the Archaea Biology Unit at the University of Vienna, studying biofilms in ammonia oxidizing archaea, Thomas now joined the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience at the University of Aalborg as a postdoctoral researcher to hunt for uncultivated microbes. Thomas is investigating how to reduce and recycle different kinds of plastic waste in the lab.
